What to expect

The highlights of this cruise

  • Chile’s fjords as the world’s giant history book – with the Torres del Paine National Park1 as a highlight
  • Contrasts beyond all expectations with majestic glaciers, tranquil waterways and bizarre volcanoes
  • Wildlife watching in a rich animal kingdom with condors, rheas, flamingos, dolphins and whales
  • Culture of the Andean states today and 2,000 years ago – with the mysterious Nazca Lines1 in the desert
  • Active adventures in nature such as hikes in stunning national parks
  • At anchor

  • Very few continents have such spectacular nature, such fascinating flora and fauna: the small, manoeuvrable HANSEATIC nature can demonstrate its advantages in the narrow waterways of the Chilean fjords. The passage through the Beagle Channel provides a fantastic start with the shimmering blue tongue of ice that is the Garibaldi Glacier. Seabirds and maybe even some seals dart to and fro near the mighty glacier’s edge. Follow the route taken by the first person to circumnavigate the globe through the famous Strait of Magellan to Punta Arenas. A tour to see the Magellanic penguins on Isla Magdalena1 provides insights into a unique habitat. Around 50,000 breeding pairs use the nature reserve as a nursery. Another ornithological wonder awaits you with condor watching1. It is an overwhelming spectacle to see the world’s heaviest birds of prey in flight with their wingspan of more than 3 m (9.8 ft). The passage of the Kirke Narrows also reveals a wealth of natural beauty with the route to Puerto Natales that is just 100 m (328 ft) wide. After this eventful journey to the port city, which can often only be reached by plane, a masterpiece of creation awaits you: the Torres del Paine National Park1. Between glistening waterfalls, sprawling forests and shimmering aquamarine mountain lakes, granite mountains rise up around 3,000 m (9,843 ft), and Andean condors can often be seen elegantly soaring overhead. Off the beaten track, a horse ride through the pampas of Patagonia1 allows you to experience the landscape from an extraordinary perspective. The HANSEATIC nature will devote plenty of time to exploring the spectacular Chilean fjords. New surprises await around every corner: mountain landscapes, unique glaciers and sparkling tongues of ice. The excitement mounts as a gleaming wall of blue and white comes into view on the horizon: the Pio XI Glacier, offering impressive views of its 75 m (246 ft) height and the edge that spans multiple kilometres.

  • Leave the ice giants behind and step close to the fire in the town of Chaiten: whether with a climb up the Chaiten volcano1 to the edge of the caldera or a hike through Parque Pumalin1 deep into the jungle, Patagonia’s diverse landscape leaves visitors in awe. The charming city of Puerto Montt is surrounded by snow-covered volcanoes. A trip to Chile’s lake district1 will reveal the impressive natural setting in which the locals live. A thrilling white-water-rafting trip on Petrohue River1 will send you even deeper into this world of pristine forests and majestic mountains. Isla de Chiloe is famous for the living mythology of its indigenous people, the Huilliche.

  • A wealth of history and architecture from the 19th and 20th centuries awaits in Valparaiso. Get to know the UNESCO World Heritage Site in depth as you explore Valparaiso on foot, by metro and bus1. Alternatively, marvel at the capital, Santiago de Chile1 with its traces of colonial times and from the highest observation deck in South America, offering fantastic panoramic views.

  • Isla Chanaral is known for its impressive fauna. Gannets, Humboldt penguins and sea lions all live on the island.
  • The mix of history and modernity creates a charming contrast in Iquique. Whether you choose a city tour1 or explore thousand-year-old geoglyphs and historic saltpetre towns1, your team of experts will be on hand with their specialist knowledge to provide exciting insights into Chile’s cultural heritage.

  • Travel even further back in time from Paracas with a flight over the mysterious Nazca Lines1, which are over 2,000 years old. There are many theories about the origins of the geometric figures and monumental animal images. Thrilling sightings of wildlife complete the picture: with a bit of luck, you’ll spot sea lions, Peruvian gannets, pelicans and Inca terns on a boat trip to the Islas Ballestas1 – an unforgettable way to bid farewell to the natural wonders at the edge of the world. With the many amazing impressions on this cruise full of wonderful contrasts, Chile is sure to be a place you’ll never forget.

1 The shore activities are not included in the cruise price and are in the planning stage. Subject to change.
