Tokyo, the most populous city in the world, has its own unique way of blending tradition with modernity. The busy goings-on at Shibuya Crossing reflect the dynamic rhythm of the city, while the Tokyo Skytree at 634 m (2,080 ft) tall dominates the skyline and offers visitors a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. Down below in the city, historic landmarks like the Senso-ji temple and Michelin-starred restaurants and lively bars are a great way to discover the diversity of Tokyo. The Imperial Palace in the city centre is impressive thanks to its gardens and buildings steeped in history.
Shimizu, at the foot of the imposing Mount Fuji volcano, the highest mountain in Japan, is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes of green tea plantations and thick forests. For centuries, Mount Fuji has had great spiritual significance for the Japanese and it has become a symbol of Japan worldwide. The Shizuoka Prefecture, famous for being the leading tea-producing area in Japan since the 12th century, is the perfect place for a trip into nature. The coastline offers picturesque views and the hot springs, or onsen, are a relaxing place to spend time by the sea.
Hososhima, the gateway to Kyushu, invites visitors to discover the beauty of Japan’s third largest island. The landscape is dotted with mighty volcanoes, hot springs and traditional temples, which reflect the unique connection between nature and culture here. In the centre of Hososhima, you will find plenty of shops and restaurants to wander around and while away some time. The Katsuura Umikaze Park on the sea is a wonderful place to relax, with the sea breeze and views of the coastline drawing visitors under its spell. Hososhima has its own special way of combining modern life with the impressive natural scenery of Kyushu.
Just a few miles of sea separate Kagoshima on the island of Kyushu from the active Sakurajima volcano – a sight that fascinates visitors with the impressive power of nature. Kagoshima itself is a mix of traditional garden art and modern shopping districts, with the city’s exciting history and vibrant urban life blending seamlessly together. Excellent restaurants are a great place to try the region’s freshly caught delicacies. The surrounding area also offers some unique natural scenery: the beaches of Amami-Oshima, the ancient forests of Yakushima and the Kirishima group of volcanoes are genuine highlights. Geological activity in the area produces numerous hot springs, with bath houses making Kagoshima one of the largest areas for onsens in Japan – perfect for relaxing and enjoying.
With a population of around 14 million, Tianjin is one of China’s wealthiest and most modern cities. The direct-administered city near Beijing has a lively cultural scene, including the People’s Art Theatre and the Guangdong Guild Hall, famous for its elaborate wooden architecture from the Qing dynasty. The city’s development to become China’s second largest industrial and trading city and the largest financial and trading centre in northern China reflects Tianjin’s impressive economic growth. In 2018, the former province was also named the third best city to live in China. Here you can find a fascinating mix of culture, economy and quality of life.

Xiamen owes its name, meaning “door to the house”, to its centuries-old role as the gateway to China. The city has impressively clean air and encompasses the charming island of Gulangyu: a pedestrian-only island with idyllic scenery including green parks, beaches and picturesque streets with colonial architecture. The former 19th century tea trading port has maintained its importance as an international hub, while the sleek urban parks along the coast of Xiamen ensure a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere today.
