    Kai Diekmann

Kai Diekmann, born in 1964, interviewed Helmut Kohl for his school newspaper as a high school student in Bielefeld back in 1982. During his time in the Bundeswehr, he managed to enter journalism through an internship at Axel Springer Verlag. From 1998 to 2000, Diekmann served as editor-in-chief of WELT am SONNTAG, and from January 2001 to January 2017, he led BILD — to this day, the longest-serving editorin-chief in the newspaper’s history by far. The powerful figures of the Republic frequented his editorial office, confided in him, leaked state secrets to him — or talked themselves into trouble on his voicemail. In "Ich war BILD", Kai Diekmann provides exclusive insights behind the scenes of Europe’s highest-circulation tabloid newspaper. He recounts the legendary phone call from Wulff and his long and dramatic fall, Putin’s swim trunks and Erdoğan’s tirades, the passionately fought animosities with Schröder, and the only interview Trump ever gave to a German journalist. Kai Diekmann himself became a target of extremists. He is one of the cofounders of the social media agency Storymachine and lives with his wife and four
    children in Potsdam.
