    The highlights of this cruise

When we say Arctic, we actually mean the Arctic Ocean. It is around six times larger than the European Mediterranean and borders the continents of Europe, Asia and America. The best travelling conditions prevail in the Arctic summer from June to August/September. This is when the climate is mild and the wildlife is at its richest. With a small expedition ship and the Zodiacs, our robust inflatable boats, you will experience vast landscapes, deeply carved fjords, mighty glaciers and bizarre ice and rock formations from fascinating close-up.

    show complete itinerary

Svalbard: legend, magic and nautical challenge. The small HANSEATIC nature really comes into its own here. The route is redetermined daily by the captain and crew, as the weather and ice conditions determine the flexibility of the itinerary. During a tour with your team of experts in Ny-Alesund, you will learn exciting facts about climate research. The 14th July Glacier is one of the most spectacular of the 2,000 or so glaciers in the archipelago. Experience the equally fascinating Smeerenburgfjord and the mighty Monacobreen in Liefdefjord. There is a good chance of spotting polar bears at a respectful distance from the deck. Will the pack ice in North Svalbard clear the way through the Hinlopen Strait? The ability to complete a circumnavigation depends on this passage. From here, further adventures follow on the east coast of Svalbard, such as at Alkefjellet. The “bird mountain” is inhabited by thousands of birds from numerous species. You will land in Palanderbukta with the Zodiacs and look out for reindeer and Arctic foxes on a hike through the tundra. Walrus herds like to lie on the flat ledges of rock in Torellneset. Depending on the conditions, we’ll continue through the narrow Freeman Sound between Barents Island and Edgeoya, both uninhabited islands. Can you spot reindeer in the wild on Barents Island? However, the sight of surfacing whales beats all of these experiences. If you’re lucky, the world’s largest and heaviest creature – the blue whale – will even make an appearance. In Hornsund, the bird cliff of Gnalodden marks the end of your breathtaking adventure. You’ll now join Barents and Amundsen in the hall of fame of Svalbard’s explorers.

---- The ice conditions determine the course here (see map).

The itinerary depends on official approval, weather and ice conditions. The natural experiences and wildlife sightings described are possibilities on this expedition and are not guaranteed. The crew will endeavour to complete the circumnavigation of Svalbard. Circumnavigation is not guaranteed.
