Journey to Reykjavik
Reykjavik/Iceland, departure 19.00 hrs
A beauty comprising both heat and ice, Iceland is captivating with its unique contrasts and fabulous diversity. A wealth of Nordic nature that can best be discovered by circumnavigating the island by ship. Many regions are not accessible or passable by land. And so you will travel in the greatest comfort by sea on board the small HANSEATIC nature – like many of the animal inhabitants of Iceland, whose home is the sea. Enjoy vast panoramas from the deck. Go ashore where it is particularly beautiful and unspoilt. Every day is different, and our shore activities always offer new experiences. The many hikes in the harsh and beautiful landscape reveal inspiring geological extremes.

Relaxation at sea
East coast of Iceland (Seydisfjordur, Bakkagerdi )
Captivating contrasts continue along Iceland’s east coast. Marvel at Seydisfjordur, located at the end of a fjord surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The historic wooden buildings will provide great photo opportunities as you take a walk. In the Vestdalur Valley*, the flourishing variety of plants is an enchanting sight. Iceland’s magical side as the “island of mythical creatures and trolls” is revealed in Bakkagerdi. Legend has it that the queen of the elves reigns over Borgarfjordhur and the bird-inhabited cliffs where countless puffins learn to fly.
North coast of Iceland (Husavik , Hrisey , Akureyri, Grimsey )
The feeling of a true expedition will develop in the north of Iceland. Together, the coast and the sea create a natural canvas that is at once remote and soul-stirring. Husavik is the European capital of whale watching*. Will you to spot humpback whales, porpoises and dolphins in the bay? The waterfalls of the north* are a wonder to behold – for example, Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall cascading around 45 m (148 ft). Alternatively, a hike in Asbyrgi Canyon* will take you across the rocky horseshoe-shaped basin, an impression left behind by an enormous horse according to the legend. Will the next day’s weather allow you to land on the small island of Hrisey? With wide grasslands, rugged cliffs and numerous species of bird, enjoy the natural idyll with your experts on a hike. A true pearl of the north, Akureyri sits on a long fjord. Stroll through the lively narrow streets at your own pace and visit the city’s famous botanical garden. The rugged north of Iceland* provides a fascinating contrast, with volcanic forces bubbling on the earth’s surface and Godafoss waterfall, the “Waterfall of the Gods”. Alternatively, explore the remote, inhospitable and lunar-like settings of Iceland’s highlands in a jeep* or experience nature up-close with a ride on Icelandic horses*, known for their gentle demeanour and their special tolt gait. Conclude your adventures by seeing out the day and enjoying the ambience of the evening by the fjord. Viking history, basalt columns or puffins – what will fascinate you most when you land on Grimsey? You can be sure of one thing: it will also be the Arctic Circle, where the small island lies.
West coast of Iceland (Reykjarfjordur, cruising in the western fjords and off Latrabjarg, Grundarfjordhur)
The HANSEATIC nature shows you Iceland in a way that most other travellers cannot experience. Look forward to the magic of solitude in the western fjords. Rugged landscapes and deep inlets – with people only few and far between. The small village of Reykjarfjordur is an isolated place to live. Land with the Zodiacs and wander through the vast and seemingly endless terrain. Iceland’s natural treasures continue on a flexible cruise in the western fjords – fjords that stretch out into the Atlantic like fingers on a hand and create an extraordinary landscape. Take in the scenery from the many open deck spaces and the deck tour at the bow. With a little luck, you will have the opportunity to see whales. The sheer cliffs of Latrabjarg are a nesting ground for millions of puffins, guillemots and razorbills. Your experts are happy to share their expertise on the different species of bird and reveal exciting facts about them. The explorer in you will take flight in Grundarfjordhur. The western peninsula of Snaefellsnes* brings together all of Iceland’s characteristic natural elements: cooled lava flows, steep fjords and snow-covered volcanoes serve as reminders of the elemental power of creation. Your explorer’s heart is bound to beat faster on a cave adventure in the volcano*. A local guide will lead you towards the “centre of the earth” – as Jules Verne described it. Impressive rock formations and stalactites with yellowish crystals line the way. The final entry in the logbook of your unforgettable expedition.
