Scheduled flight from Germany to Keflavik
Journey to Reykjavik/Iceland
Reykjavik/Iceland, departure 19.00 hrs
Heimaey/Westman Islands/Iceland, from 7.00 to 13.30 hrs
How well do you really know Europe? This multifaceted cruise on the HANSEATIC spirit will reveal new sides to fascinating islands, a series of gems from north to south. Join the optional pre-cruise programme and let Iceland get you in the mood for the natural diversity of the Arctic Circle before your route takes you to Heimaey. The only inhabited island in the Westman archipelago bears witness to the Eldfell eruption of 1973. With its bizarre lava formations, this is an explorer’s paradise. An adventurous quad bike tour* takes you along the impressive coastline and right into the centre of the Eldfell volcano.
Relaxation at sea
Isle of Lewis/Outer Hebrides/Scotland, from 9.00 to 19.00 hrs
Unspoilt and wild: the Isle of Lewis is a true Scottish beauty. Rugged mountains are interspersed with peaceful lakes and idyllic beaches. Less obvious, but all the more mystical, are the origins of the stone circles of Callanish*, which go back around 4,000 years. The home of tweed: the Hebridean island of Harris* is truly appealing. The island’s own pure new wool is the secret to the quality of the wool cloth produced here.
Inner Hebrides (Staffa, Iona)
The Hebridean island of Staffa is an impressive stone monument to nature. Fingal’s Cave was formed where the sea spray breaks against the cliffs. When you approach the huge basalt cave in the Zodiac, weather permitting, you will understand why it inspired Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy to compose his Hebrides overture. Landing on the remote island of Iona will allow you to explore the cradle of Scottish Christianisation at your leisure.
Cruise on the River Mersey
Liverpool/England, from 13.00 to 0.00 hrs
Your cruise on the River Mersey will bring to life the song “Ferry Cross The Mersey” after which you will start your explorations of Liverpool. The transformation from a working-class city to a creative hotspot is very impressive here. There’s no denying that the city is famous for the Fab Four. In the footsteps of the Beatles*, the beat of the 1960s will accompany your explorations. The surrounding area also has plenty of stories to tell – for example, in charming North Wales*. The Ladies of Llangollen lived here together in the 18th century, contradicting the norms of the time. Historic Chester* offers a blend of medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture, including one of the country’s most beautiful cathedrals.
Douglas/Isle of Man, from 8.00 to 19.00 hrs
The Isle of Man then awaits your visit in the middle of the Irish Sea. The Nordic culture here has been shaped by the Celts and Vikings. One of the world’s oldest parliaments, Tynwald Court, can be found here, as well as the Manx Gaelic spoken language. Stroll the long seafront promenade in Douglas or take the steam train to Rushen Castle*, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval castles. Or you could ride on a three-wheeled motorcycle on the Isle of Man TT circuit*, with a glimpse of the legendary trophy.
Fishguard/Wales, from 8.00 to 19.00 hrs
Fishguard is a charming town on the Welsh coast. Explore it at your leisure. The so-called Lower Town, directly at the harbour, is particularly worth seeing with its colourful fishermen’s houses lined up closely together. A large tapestry in the town hall depicts the heroic battle against the French Revolutionary Army in 1797. The small town is also your starting point for a journey back in time to Pembroke Castle and Tenby*. The 12th-century castle is considered the most beautiful in the region. Things get active on a kayak tour* along the coast.
Isles of Scilly (Tresco, St Mary´s)
Some 45 km (28 mi.) off the British mainland, the Isles of Scilly are surprisingly like a kind of “English South Seas”. One day, two islands: on Tresco, over 4,000 subtropical plants in the famous Abbey Garden demonstrate the effects of the mild Gulf Stream. The neighbouring island of St Mary’s invites you to wander through its picturesque coastal landscape with your experts.
Belle-Ile/France, from 13.00 to 23.00 hrs
There’s a clue to the beauty of France’s largest Atlantic island in its name: Belle-Ile. Wild, vast and wonderful – see for yourself on a coastal walk*. As you follow an old customs route, impressive views of the island and its little bays will be revealed. Alongside unspoilt nature, experience the dreamily romantic harbour of Le Palais as you stroll along the promenade.
Ile d’Yeu, from 7.00 to 14.00 hrs
Bilbao/Spain, from 8.00 to 19.00 hrs
Art also remains the focus in Bilbao on the Iberian peninsula. Combine Spanish culture with important works of modern art when you visit Bilbao’s old town and the Guggenheim Museum*. Discover the drama of nature on a hike through the Basque landscape* – crowned with a rocky island with an abbey accessed via a 200 m (656 ft) long stone bridge over the cliffs. A splendid culmination to your rediscovery of a seemingly familiar Europe.
