Charter flight from Hanover** to Longyearbyen
Longyearbyen/Spitsbergen/Norway, departure 19.00 hrs
Spitsbergen (Liefdefjord, Smeerenburgfjord, Ny-Alesund, 14th July Glacier, Prins Karls Forland, Hornsund)
Island worlds that couldn’t be any more different: HANSEATIC spirit sets course for two Nordic islands, Spitsbergen and Iceland. Experience exhilarating moments in the home of polar bears and in the world of legendary volcanoes and geysers. The main roles here are played by whales, Arctic foxes, walruses and polar bears. Ever-changing views of glacier snouts and striking summits escort you along the way. The captain and crew’s polar experience ensure that you will enjoy some spectacular experiences when cruising off unique glacial backdrops, on landings with the Zodiacs and during various walks with your experts. The shimmering blue Monacobreen in the Liefdefjord is a natural wonder. The Smeerenburgfjord is equally spectacular with its fantastic glacial backdrop. Ny-Alesund is one of the world’s most northerly settlements. Once a coal mining town, it is now a research station for international scientists studying meteorology, climate change and the Northern Lights. Another highlight on your explorer route is the 14th July Glacier. Its blue-white appearance contrasts with the dark mountain scenery. With a little luck, some impressive encounters with wildlife await on the small island of Prins Karls Forland, where imposing walruses often gather in herds. Once again, nature provides incredible experiences with wide stretches of coastline and striking peaks in the Hornsund fjord, which is 25 km (15.5 mi.) long and carves its way deep into the land.
Relaxation at sea
Passing Jan Mayen/Norway
The largely glaciated island of Jan Mayen, crowned by the 2,277 m (7,470 ft) Beerenberg, heralds another exciting chapter in your voyage of discovery: Iceland.
Iceland (Grimsey , Akureyri, cruising in the western fjords, Patreksfjordur , cruising off Latrabjarg)
Impressive volcanic landscapes and gigantic waterfalls define the contrasting nature of Iceland. What kinds of legends, myths and secrets will you uncover? Located right on the Arctic Circle, Grimsey provides fascinating insights into the Viking history, birdlife and geology of the volcanic island. Akureyri, a northern gem, is home to the writer Jon Sveinsson and your gateway to majestic nature. The rugged north of Iceland*, with its bizarre lava formations and craters, allows you to discover the evidence of recent volcanic activity. There will be a chance to see the seabirds at Myvatn Lake before visiting the thundering Godafoss, the “waterfall of the gods”. Alternatively, take a comfortable countryside trek to get to know some island inhabitants with a friendly character on a ride on Icelandic horses*, known for their special tolt gait. Iceland’s astounding biodiversity continues on a cruise in the western fjords, creating a truly extraordinary landscape. Patreksfjordur is quiet and tranquil and your experts will accompany you here as you visit the village and its surroundings. The Westfjord panorama and Dynjandi waterfall* illustrate the legacy of the Ice Age in Iceland. Whilst most of the coastline is black with lava, Raudasandur beach* is red, orange and gold. Cruising off Latrabjarg, by contrast, will put you in the thrall of wildlife. The cliffs are teeming with puffins, guillemots and auks. Whales could also appear at any time – at this time of year, the gentle giants of the seas return to the north after the winter. One overwhelming memory among many that will fill your traveller’s diary after this trip.
