Charter flight from Zurich** to Kangerlussuaq
Kangerlussuaq/Greenland, departure 22.00 hrs
West coast of Greenland (Sisimiut, Ilulissat, Disko Bay, Evigedsfjord, Nuuk)
From the Arctic Circle to Hamburg, this expedition with the HANSEATIC nature will give you a new understanding and deep feelings for the unspoilt beauty of the remote Arctic region. Discover the many sides to Greenland: ice, mighty mountain and fjord landscapes and traces of the Vikings and Inuit culture. Your adventure begins on the west coast of Greenland. You will be greeted by the colourful settlement of Sisimiut, located on an ice-free strip of coastline with a gate made of whale jawbones to welcome visitors. Encounter the creative power of the elements in Ilulissat, where your experts will accompany you on an expedition tour. A hike will take you to the Ilulissat Icefjord, where massive icebergs in colours ranging from pure white to turquoise offer a breathtaking panorama. Disko Bay is another magical world: as you cruise and ride in the Zodiacs, marvel at the shimmering ice formations that drift slowly and majestically through the water. On a Zodiac ride and hike to the mighty Evigedsfjord, your gaze will be drawn above you: between imposing, towering cliffs, the expanse, silence and extraordinarily clear air come together to create intensive experiences. Your adventure on this cruise will hopefully be rounded off with the unforgettable natural spectacle of the Northern Lights. The old and new are brought together in typically Greenland style in the capital city of Nuuk, where the hills are covered in colourful houses. Exhibits at the national museum show how the Inuit adapted to the extremes of nature in times gone by – traditions that continue in the country’s present-day culture and shape Greenland’s identity.
South coast of Greenland (Arsukfjord, Hvalsey, Qaqortoq, cruise through Prince Christian Sound)
On the south coast of Greenland, the expedition takes you to Arsukfjord. In Greenlandic, “Arsuk” means “beloved place” – and you will soon see why on a hike along the fjord. Together with your experts, you will hopefully be able to see musk oxen in the tundra cloaked in its autumn colours. In the abandoned town of Ivittuut you can also gain an insight into the era of mining, and perhaps find yourself some cryolite and siderite souvenirs. Greenland is closely associated with Erik the Red. He gave the island its name of “green land” after he was banished here from Iceland in the 10th century. According to the tales, the settlement of Hvalsey was also built by the Norse. The ruins of a Viking church, possibly the country’s most significant, bear witness to their presence. Built in around 1300, the granite walls have withstood the weather to this day. The small town of Qaqortoq is greatly influenced by the Inuit – its museum displays magnificent traditional dress and traditional hunting tools from indigenous peoples. After these excursions into history, you will return to a magnificent natural world: when cruising through Prince Christian Sound, you will be treated to the unique and majestic sight of steep cliffs, glaciers and waterfalls passing you by and strikingly reflected in the deep-blue water.
