Relaxation at sea/cruising in the Scottish islands
The untamed power of the Atlantic in northern Europe sets the stage for breathtaking natural spectacles – and the front-row seats are on board the HANSEATIC nature. Beautiful, nearby and so magical: from the Irish Sea to Iceland discover a cruise full of contrasts – imposing and delightful, barren and inviting, secluded and full of life. In the summer months, the north is bright and fresh. Seabirds welcome their young into the world. The days are wonderfully long and the nights almost light, making remote islands and magnificent landscapes a dream destination for nature lovers and a paradise for ornithologists. How varied will the land of kings and clans prove to be? Where will traces of an eventful history be on show on landings with the Zodiacs? A cruise in the Scottish islands will awaken a mix of curiosity and the feeling of a true expedition. Deep bays such as the wild and romantic Loch Linnhe alternate with narrow straits such as the Corran Narrows, where the HANSEATIC nature can make the best use of its advantages as a small expedition ship.
Fort William/Scotland/Great Britain
You’ll head deep into the picturesque landscapes to reach Fort William. This welcoming town is dominated by Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Great Britain. Set off from here to reveal the secrets of Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle*. Even if you don’t see Nessie, the castle ruins from the 14th century provide a great photo opportunity. Alternatively, it’s all aboard for a ride on the Jacobite steam train*! When you go over the stone Glenfinnan Viaduct on the way to the fishing town of Mallaig, you’ll be transported into a scene from the Harry Potter films – this is the line leading to the wizarding school.
Inner Hebrides (Iona, Isle of Lunga)
The Inner and Outer Hebrides offer very special experiences. In the rugged island world off Scotland’s coastline, the manoeuvrable HANSEATIC nature will be truly in its element. Unspoilt landscapes are revealed on a landing on Iona, where you can learn all about the cradle of Scottish Christianisation The Isle of Lunga is a haven for numerous species of seabird. Watch the puffins and other feathered creatures from a Zodiac
Outer Hebrides (St. Kilda, Isle of Lewis)
Your cruise continues in spectacular style on the St. Kilda archipelago, where black cliffs rise up steeply out of the waves. The ruins of stone houses provide a sign of the residents that once lived on Great Britain’s most remote islands. Today, the islands are a breeding ground for seabirds, as you will discover on a hike with your experts. The Isle of Lewis emphasises Scotland’s diversity with striking mountains, calm lakes and idyllic beaches. Adding to the magic of the scenery is the mystery surrounding the origins of the stone circles of Callanish*, which go back around 4,000 years. On a scenic tour to Harris*, capture the most beautiful shots of the home of tweed. Or perhaps you would like to learn more about the diversity of species in the Atlantic? On a whale and dolphin watching trip in the North Minch*, you will discover how the strait offers protection and a feeding ground for these creatures.
Relaxation at sea
Iceland (Seydisfjordur, Bakkagerdi, Husavik, cruising off Latrabjarg, Grundarfjordur)
Iceland offers some of the most exciting spots among Europe’s characterful landscapes. Volcanic, icy and untamed – it is an exciting world of contrasts. With its historic wooden buildings, the fishing village of Seydisfjordur at the end of a deep fjord is a lovely place for a walk. The region’s magical side is revealed in Bakkagerdi. Legend has it that the queen of the elves reigns over the bird-inhabited cliffs where countless puffins learn to fly. Husavik is Iceland’s oldest settlement. On a whale watching trip in Skjalfandi Bay*, you will discover how the bay is one of the best places in Europe for seeing whales. Will you be lucky enough to see a humpback whale here? The Myvatn region and the Godafoss waterfall* combine natural phenomena with legends. The name of Lake Myvatn (or “Midge Lake”) refers to the swarms of midges that often hover like pulsating clouds of fog in the summer months. The Icelanders are said to have consigned their pagan idols to the thundering waters of the Godafoss waterfall after they had been converted to Christianity. Cruising off Latrabjarg presents a completely different picture. Millions of seabirds, including guillemots, puffins and razorbills, nest in the high rugged cliffs. The explorer in you will take flight in Grundarfjordhur. The western peninsula of Snaefellsnes* brings together all of Iceland’s characteristic natural elements: cooled lava flows, steep fjords and snow-covered volcanoes serve as reminders of the elemental power of creation. Alternatively, admire the epic landscape on a hike on Kirkjufell mountain*, which owes its spectacular cone shape to glaciers in the Ice Age. As you think back over the many different contrasting features of northern Europe on this cruise, wave goodbye to Iceland with the traditional “Bless, bless!”.
