    Your ship - HANSEATIC nature

    The new expedition class

The naming ceremony of the HANSEATIC nature took place in Hamburg on 4 May 2019. Together with its structurally identically sister ships HANSEATIC inspiration (2019) and HANSEATIC spirit (2021), the small and state-of-the-art expedition ship explores remote destinations and visits the world’s most fascinating natural landscapes on challenging routes.

The new expedition class – which offers space for a maximum of 230 guests (or 199 guests on Antarctic cruises and Spitsbergen circumnavigations) – sets standards in terms of variety, comfort and personal space. This is why our ship has more open deck space than any other expedition ship. Find out more!

Like never before, the small HANSEATIC nature brings together Asian and North American contrasts with great pioneering spirit. Start by exploring Japan’s unfamiliar side together with your experts in the island world of Hokkaido. A new land of smiles with blank pages still unfilled by tourism – your voyage of discovery will craft new pictures of Asia each day like delicate origami. Rishiri will immediately surprise you with a side of nature that is rarely seen. Explore the island on a hike with your experts. The landscape of Teuri is characterised by lush meadows, steep cliffs and seabirds that can be easily spotted.

    Aomori/Honshu, from 12.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs

Natural landscapes, famous traditional festivals and historical sites – Aomori is located at the northern tip of Honshu and is connected to the island of Hokkaido by the Seikan Tunnel. The fantastic lantern parade, the so-called “Neputa Matsuri”, in which huge, illuminated papier mache figures are paraded through the streets after dark, attracts almost three million spectators every year in August. Explore the city on a sightseeing tour* with its hidden treasures – the Seiryuji Temple with a giant seated Buddha statue, the Sannai-Maruyama archaeological site and the museum with the floats of the Aomori Neputa Festival. Or discover the deep, crystal-clear Lake Towada in Towada-Hachimantai National Park on a scenic tour*; along the Oirase River, you will then reach Mount Hakkoda. In good weather conditions, you can take the cable car up to approx. 1,200 m (3,937 ft) and enjoy the view.

    Thursday, 29.06.2023

    Hakodate/Hokkaido, from 7.00 to 14.00 hrs

From Hakodate, your attention turns to the volcano, birds and vegetation of Onuma Quasi-National Park*. Alternatively, inspect fresh fish and crab on a market visit before continuing your city tour* with a visit to Goryokaku Fort, the first Western-style fortress in Japan.

    Friday, 30.06.2023

    Kushiro/Hokkaido, from 7.00 to 19.00 hrs

In Kushiro, the Kushiro-shitsugen wetland* reveals the realm of the red-crowned crane. Having almost died out in the 1950s, the cranes now continue to perform their dances here. Alternatively, explore pure nature in Akan-Mashu National Park*. Towering volcanoes, clear lakes and deep forests provide a home for Yezo sika deer and Ezo red foxes.

Go ashore with your experts to trace the history of Adak Island, a former military base that is now practically a ghost town. Things get a little livelier as you cruise off Chagulak Island in the company of thousands of petrels. There is a good chance of spotting orcas and humpback whales on your flexible route through the tangled maze of the islands. Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island tells the history of Russian America, as Alaska was called until the mid 19th century. A hike on Popof Island takes you to the home of bison.
