Like a string of pearls, each destination on this route is more beautiful than the last. The first stop is Menorca, which has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Be amazed by the diversity on an island tour* – from forested hills and deep ravines to bays nestled romantically between the cliffs. Or trace the footsteps of Cézanne through the impressive town of Aix-en-Provence*.

On Easter Saturday, Sete, the Venice of Languedoc, awaits with its lively fishing harbour. A city walk* leads you around the Canal Royal and through the old town, past colourful facades and little fishing boats. Montpellier* offers you a magical old town with typical courtyards dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. You could also go looking for medieval architecture in picturesque Aigues-Mortes*. Even from a distance, the silhouette of mighty walls and towers stands out against the vast landscape of lagoons and salt flats.

The history of the Romans is everywhere in Tarragona. A city tour* will reveal impressive evidence of their influence, such as the amphitheatre and the remains of the Roman city wall. Not far away lies the Cistercian monastery of Poblet*, one of the most important monasteries in Catalonia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Head to the city of Reus – the birthplace of Gaudí* – and follow in the footsteps of the famous architect. See the house where he was born and the church where he was baptised, as well as the historic town centre. A trip into the Ebro Delta* showcases unique nature with a hike along flat paths. With a little luck, you’ll be able to spot flamingos or other waterbirds. If you like a more cosmopolitan atmosphere, you can look forward to the exciting cultural metropolis of Barcelona* with its Gothic quarter, winding streets and medieval squares.

Spain’s third-largest city greets you with a mix of futuristic structures, magnificent historic buildings and an expansive beach. Get to know both the traditional and modern sides of Valencia, or embark on an excursion to Albufera Natural Park* with its little islands, dunes and many species of bird. Alternatively, discover the San Jose Caves* on an underground boat trip.

Marbella, with its exclusive marina of Puerto Banus, is more than just an elegant seaside resort. A walking tour of Marbella and Puerto Banus* transforms the narrow streets of the old town into the lifeblood of past eras, with fascinating Renaissance style and Arabic elements. Historic Ronda* is one of the famous “white villages” and a highlight of Andalusia, with parts of the town perched on the edge of a 160 m (525 ft) deep gorge spanned by a bridge. Spring is the best time to discover the traces of the Moorish rule and the birthplace of bullfighting. Alternatively, go for an active hike along part of the Caminito del Rey climbing experience*. The former king’s path takes you through a spectacular gorge above a turquoise river and steep rock faces.

Andalusian atmosphere greets you once again in the African-influenced old town of Cadiz. Stroll at your own pace through the narrow streets, past beautiful baroque churches. Perhaps you’ll head to the Mercado Central for some authentic atmosphere and culinary delicacies. Discover the famous Giralda, the Barrio de Santa Cruz and the Alcazar on the excursion to Seville*, the heartland of flamenco. The excursion to Jerez de la Frontera – horse show and fine sherry* will introduce you to the birthplace of the much-loved drink sherry and some famous horses.

Gibraltar is like a melting pot of cultures.
