Scheduled flight from Germany to Keflavik
Journey to Reykjavik/Iceland
Reykjavik/Iceland, departure 19.00 hrs
Heimaey/Westman Islands/Iceland, from 7.00 to 14.00 hrs
At the northern edge of Europe, nature makes its mark with contrasts of heat and ice and geological extremes. Very few places give such a direct glimpse into primeval forces. Be enchanted by beautiful, mystical landscapes, deep fjords and fascinating wildlife. Your exciting circumnavigation begins with the Westman Islands. In 1973, the Eldfell volcano erupted on Heimaey, the largest island, covering it in lava streams. Take a scenic flight above volcanoes and waterfalls* and see the black fields stretch out below you, combining with the icy blue and the white of the glaciers to form a sea of colour. The contrasts of Westman Islands will never cease to amaze as you start to explore.
Djupivogur/Iceland, from 7.00 to 19.00 hrs
Your personal Icelandic saga takes you to the eastern fjords and Djupivogur, one of the most beautiful villages and a historic trading post. Embark on a glacier adventure to Vatnajokull* and explore Europe’s largest ice cap, or visit Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon* and watch icebergs glistening like diamonds from the black beach.
Expedition day on Iceland’s east coast
Seydisfjordur/Iceland, from 8.00 to 13.00 hrs
Relaxation at sea
Helgoland/Germany, from 15.00 to 20.00 hrs
Discover one of North Germany’s most imposing natural landmarks: “Lange Anna” on Helgoland. The island is a breeding ground for northern gannets and many other species of bird. Common murres hunt for crabs and small fish on the Lummenfelsen. You, meanwhile, will hunt for spectacular panoramas on a 2.8 km (1.74 mi.) walk along the edge of the cliffs.
List/Sylt/Germany, from 8.00 to 17.30 hrs
(lay time subject to the tides)
Sylt is the undisputed “queen of the North Sea” and one of Germany’s most popular islands. List, its most northerly community, is also well worth a visit. Experience the inimitable character of this natural paradise, a living artwork of lush green salt flats, heathland and dunes as far as the eye can see. A walk on the mudflats of Blidsel Bay* offers a panoramic view of Schleswig-Holstein’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ashore, you can explore the island on a vintage bus*, which will take you through a wandering dune landscape and past the North Frisian villages of Hornum and Keitum with their thatched-roof houses. Alternatively, you can relax by taking an e-bike across the island*.
Hamburg/Germany, arrival 8.00 hrs
