How best to plan your time in the trendy Scandinavian city to ensure an unforgettable experience? Simply take a look at the many possibilities and choose the activities that speak to you. For an initial impression, take a city tour* past the city hall, Tivoli amusement park and the national museum. Keep your eyes peeled – the city’s famous Little Mermaid statue is actually so small that she is easy to miss. Other highlights on the tour include a visit to the Royal Opera House – one of the most modern in the world with its futuristic architecture – followed by a boat trip through the bustling port and the canals of Christianshavn. History fans can learn interesting information about the Danish monarchy with a visit to Rosenborg Castle*, one of the most beautiful in the country. Built in 1606/1607 by Christian IV as a pleasure palace and used as a residence by the Danish kings until the early 18th century, the building is now a museum showcasing exhibits such as paintings, furniture and sculptures from the private collection of Danish kings. The royal regalia such as the crown and crown jewels can also be seen here. Another destination well worth visiting is Christiansborg Palace*, which for a long time was the centre of power in Denmark and is still the seat of the Danish parliament today. After visiting the impressive royal reception rooms, you’ll head to a nearby restaurant to sample some “smushi”* – a local blend of Danish “smorrebrod” and Japanese sushi. A canal trip* past various sights rounds off your excursion. You’ll arrive back in the present day on Jaegersborggade, the hippest street in the trendy Norrebro district*, where you’ll find top restaurants, stylish cafes, vintage shops, boutiques and wine bars. Enjoy the special mix of an open, friendly attitude to life and modern sense of style, which the Danes even have a word for: “hyggelig”.
