Thu 07.10 Lisbon – West Cliffs Golf Links
If you didn’t know you were on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, you might think you were on a Scottish links course. So if you like links courses, you will be thrilled by West Cliffs. The course unfolds in the Scottish manner, surrounded by the unspoilt dune landscape, with some very tricky greens.
Sun 10.10 Ponta Delgada/Sao Miguel – Campo de Golfe das Furnas
The first nine holes date back to 1936 – making this one of the oldest courses in the Azores. The fairways are largely confined by ancient trees, forcing you to stick to the playing area. Otherwise, the course is one of wide fairways and playable greens.
Mon 11.10 Praia da Vitoria/Terceira – Clube de Golfe da Ilha Terceira
18 beautifully designed holes nestled in a sea of lush vegetation, including blooming azaleas and hydrangeas. The generally straight fairways allow players of all abilities to obtain a good result. The course is situated 375 m (1,230 ft) above sea level, which means it is very susceptible to wind. Play it safe and take one club less.
Wed 13.10 Funchal/Madeira – Palheiro Golf Club
To play this course, you need to know how to handle slopes. There are some sizeable height differences to contend with, as the 18 holes take you through the Palheiro Estate with its beautiful flowers and lush vegetation. A final drink in the clubhouse will be a particular highlight – located above the course and 500 m (1,640 ft) above sea level, it looks over large swathes of the course and offers views of the island as far as the Atlantic.
