The 80,000 people who are said to have once lived here disappeared suddenly in the 8th century. At the southern entrance to the Panama Canal lies the modern capital city of the same name, which also has a great deal of historical charm: the pretty Casco Viejo* old town and the white Presidential Palace are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. By contrast, the huge Miraflores Locks are symbolic of more modern times. Gatun Lake* was created artificially to build the Panama Canal. These days, its side branches are home to capuchin monkeys, caimans and toucans. You will get a spectacular view of the rainforest from the cable car*, which takes you high over the tree tops.
