The old town sits on a steep cliff, beckoning with laid-back bars, little boutiques and typically Italian streets perfect for a stroll. There are numerous bays and sandy beaches to visit, as well as Reggio di Calabria*, which lies at the foot of the Aspromonte mountains and is known for the Riace bronzes.
Messina/Sicily/Italy, 6.00 – 19.00 hrs
The “gateway to Sicily” is home to an impressive cathedral from the 12th century and a bell tower with the largest astronomical clock in the world. Not far away, the beautiful little town of Taormina* with its famous ancient theatre lies at the foot of Mount Etna. Alternatively, a classic car trip* in an original Fiat 500 takes you to the village of Savoca, one of the locations in the classic film The Godfather.
Syracuse/Sicily/Italy, 7.00 – 18.00 hrs
Syracuse was one of the most important cities in Ancient Greece and to this day it has a wealth of historic heritage to explore. Delve into the local offering of fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables with a trip to the market*, before sampling the Sicilian cuisine for yourself. One particular highlight is Mount Etna*, Europe’s largest active volcano, which you can explore with a tour by cable car and all-terrain vehicle to around 2,900 m (9,514 ft) above sea level.

Strong Greek influences also echo through this town’s history. Follow these traces in Agrigento* with a walking tour of the Valley of the Temples, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Or visit the remains of the former Greek city of Heraclea Minoa*.
